For Your Information

Some Screen printing Terms:

Artwork is the starting point of screen-printing. The first step to a final printed T-shirt
is obtaining or making the artwork of the desired print.

It is important that you know now that you do not need to be an artist to print t-shirts.

Silkscreen is a square metal or wooden frame with a screen like mesh.
Mesh is the screen like material that goes on the screen it has a certain amount of
holes in it per square inch from 60 to 320. These holes allow ink to go through the
screen onto the t-shirt in varying quantity and detail.

Emulsion is like a glue that when put on the screen and dried in a dark room (this
is very important) it blocks the holes and prevents the ink from getting through to the t-shirt.

Halogen Light / Exposure Light is used to permanently dry the emulsion on the screen so no ink
can go through the screen. It is what is used to burn the screen or put the artwork
on the screen so that only the holes where the art work is will let the ink go through the screen.

Burning a Screen the process of using the halogen light to put the artwork in the
screen so that there is a stencil of the artwork in the screen.

Screen Block is used after you burn the screen to plug up remaining small holes
you do not want ink to get through in your screen.

Squeegee is a handle with a special kind of rubber on it that
is used to pull the ink evenly across the screen and push it through the holes onto the shirt.

Coating the Screen putting the emulsion on the screen prior to burning the
artwork in the screen.

Screen Coater is an L shaped instrument used to put the emulsion evenly on the
screen to coat the screen with emulsion.

Register the screen(s) is to line the artwork in the screen up with the t-shirts so
that you can print in the middle or the same place on each shirt every time. This
term also refers to more than one color printing where you line each screen (also
known as colour) up with each other so that they do not over lap. They fit just right
just like when you see the artwork on paper. This process is only done with
silkscreen machines and this is why people buy them.
